Selling Units (Overview)
Selling Units in HirePOS define how your items are priced. Each selling unit represents a different rate, such as Each, Half-Day, Day, or Week.
Each item can have one price per selling unit.
You can view and manage your selling units by navigating to:
Setup > Item Related > Selling Units
By default, HirePOS includes the following selling units:
Each
Half-Day
Day
Week
These defaults cover the most common pricing scenarios for hire businesses. However, selling units are fully configurable, and you can create additional units to suit your specific business requirements.
Note: Prices are assigned to items themselves under Setup > Items, not within the selling unit setup.
Selling Unit Types
There are three main selling unit types, each designed for a different pricing scenario. Choosing the correct type is important, as each behaves differently within HirePOS.
Non-Time Based Units
Non-time based units do not include any time span or duration settings. Items using this type are treated as having a flat price and are not affected by Autocalc.
The default Each unit is an example of a non-time based selling unit.
Common uses include:
Non-hire items
Fixed-price fees
Charges that do not vary by hire duration
For non-time based units, the Qty / Units field on invoices represents both:
The number of items, and
The number of units being charged
Time-Based Units
Time-based units include a defined time span and are used for hire pricing that varies based on duration.
HirePOS uses an Autocalc process to determine:
Which time-based selling unit applies, and
How many units should be charged based on the hire period
For example, the default Day unit is set to 24 hours, meaning:
One day rate is charged for each 24-hour block of hire time
Time-based units include additional configuration options that allow you to fine-tune Autocalc behaviour to match your business rules. These options are covered in more detail below.
For time-based units, the Qty / Units field represents only the number of chargeable units (for example, 2 Day units) and does not affect the item quantity.
Meter-Based Units
Meter-based units are a specialised selling unit type, typically used for equipment that is charged based on a meter reading (for example, hours run or usage measured on a machine).
These units behave similarly to time-based units in that:
The Qty / Units field represents the number of units being charged
The item quantity itself does not change
Configuring Time-Based Units
If the default selling units do not suit your pricing model and you need more advanced or customised configurations, refer to the following help guides for detailed setup instructions:
