Serial Tracking Numbers and Test & Tag Records

Test & Tag records can be recorded against an item's serial tracking number. This allows the testing history and next test due date to be associated with the specific physical asset that was tested.

A Test & Tag record retains the serial number that was recorded at the time of testing.

Changing a serial tracking number later does not change the serial number stored against existing Test & Tag records. This is intentional, as historical records should continue to identify the asset that was originally tested.

When one physical asset is removed and replaced with another, do not rename the existing serial tracking number to the new asset's serial number.

Instead:

1. Suspend the serial tracking row for the old asset.

2. Create a new serial tracking row for the replacement asset.

3. Record future Test & Tag activity against the new serial number.

This preserves the testing history of the original asset and keeps the replacement asset's records separate.

An existing serial tracking number should only be changed when correcting a genuine data-entry error for the same physical asset.

If the serial number belongs to a different or replacement asset, create a new serial tracking row instead.
