Companions in the Online Store (and Related Items)

Item Companions can be used in the online store to help ensure your customer is provided with all the relevant options and accessories for the item they are going to hire.

Companions can either be optional (the customer can choose to add them to the cart), or required (they will be automatically added to the cart with the master item).

To use companions in the online store, they need to:

  • Be assigned to an item via Setup > Items > item > Companions
  • Be active in Setup > Preferences > Online Store > Setup Store Items (have a website code)

Following is an outline look at setting up companions to work as either required or optional in the online store.

Setup Companions against an Item

Before you can use companions in the online store you need an item in HirePOS for each companion, and these need to be linked to the main item.

  1. Navigate to Setup > Items
  2. Ensure you have items setup for each item you wish to hire or sell on the online store (including companions)
  1. Select a main or master item that you wish to link companions to

  1. Navigate to the Companions tab

  1. Select the items that you wish to make a companion of the main item

At this point, you are faced with checkboxes for the required setting.

Amongst other things, the required setting force an online store customer to take the companion into their cart when adding the master item.

In this example, we are going to set up 2 items, one with required companions, one with optional.

Required

To set a companion as required, enable the required setting for that companion.

As an example, here we see the ‘Mini Excavator’ item with 2 required companions set:

 Optional (Not Required)

To set a companion as optional simply do not enable the required setting for that companion

As an example, here we see the ‘Auger Driver’ item with 3 optional companions set:

Enable Companions in the Online Store

In order for your customers to be able to see and use the companions on the online store, you must activate the items.

  1. Navigate to Setup > Preferences > Online Store > Setup Store Items
  2. Search for or locate the items you wish to activate
  3. Select the items using the checkboxes on the left
  4. Click Activate Store Items
  1. Repeat this for any other items you wish to activate

Now is normally a good time to add images and descriptions to these items.

Tip:
Companions will sort themselves by their Website Code on the online store item pages. If you have a list of companions you would like to re-arrange, consider structuring their Website Code to suit.

Enable Required Companions in the Online Store

By default, companions, required or not, will behave like optional companions in the online store.

To enable the required companion feature in HirePOS:

  1. Navigate to Setup > Preferences > Online Store
  2. Enable Use required companions
  1. Click Save Changes

In addition to the companions setup, we can use the related items feature in the online store to offer the auger driver (and its companions) to the customer.

  1. Navigate to Setup > Preferences > Online Store > Setup Store Items
  2. Open an item you wish to add a related item to
  1. Navigate to the Related Items tab
  2. Add the related item(s) the list
  1. Click Save Changes

Example Results

In this example setup, we have an ‘excavator’ that has 2 required companions (a ‘large’ and ‘small bucket’). We also have an ‘auger driver’ that has 3 optional companions (‘450’, ‘600’, and ‘900 augers’)

In addition, we have used the Related Item feature to make the ‘auger driver’ a suggested option to people who are looking at the excavator on the online store.

Required Companions

The ‘Mini Excavator’ item now lists 2x required companions.

The customer can click the Eye Preview button to get some more information about the companion

When the customer attempts to add the ‘excavator’ to the online store cart, the required companions will also be added.

The related item (auger driver) set up earlier in this example is visible at the bottom of the mini excavator page.

Clicking this will take us to the ‘auger driver’ page.

Optional Companions

The ‘auger driver’ has 3x optional companions, which can be added to the cart manually by the customer. Using this setup, the customer can add only the elements they desire.
